In your small group, please discuss the following:
- Share your names, where you live, and your children’s ages
- What is one of your favorite Advent/Christmas traditions with your family? How and when did it begin?
- Even in this season of hope/love, many feel that our world is increasingly tense and divided. Our TED Talk today is on the “culture of hate” – are there particular places where you sense that hate or division most acutely? What impact, if any, has that had on you and your family?

Discussing the TED Talk
- Although we’d all love for it to be someone else’s problem, Kohn discusses how hate creeps into our lives through our self-righteousness, need to control, assumptions, etc… how can we stop viewing hate as other peoples’ problem and accept our own role?
- Jesus calls us to love our enemies. Have you ever done that? If so, how did it go?
- How can we “improve the world, prevent others from behaving in hate, and foster compassion” - like the words that “Vicky” shared to Kohn at the end of the talk?
- Today marks the beginning of Advent – this season when we are asked to prepare our hearts for the arrival of Jesus – and the first candle we light on the Advent wreath is the candle of “hope”. Where are some places that you find hope today, and how can that hope inspire your daily living?
